ACCESS Announces J2ME Infrastructure Solution

Java Solution Allows Operators to Sell Applications Over the Air

Tokyo, Japan / Fremont, CA, USA – February 4, 2003 – ACCESS (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 4813), a global provider of integrated data platforms and Internet access technologies for the mobile communications market, announced today a Java 2 Platform, Micro Edition (J2ME) infrastructure solution. ACCESS’ J2ME solution is based on its Premium Content Subscription Server (PCSS®) that supports over the air provisioning for wireless content. It allows operators to charge users for J2ME application usage through several models, such as one-time download or subscription-based, while enabling revenue sharing with content providers. The solution also includes a “content vault” where end-users can safely store and manage content purchased from external content sources. ACCESS’ J2ME infrastructure solution promotes usage of wireless applications and drives growth in revenue from data services.

PCSS is an integrated platform that enables wireless operators to rapidly deploy value-added data services on 2.5G and 3G networks and generate revenue from premium third-party content such as games, ring-tones and screensavers. The content charges are placed on the user’s phone bill or debited from a pre-paid account. The pre-paid capabilities of PCSS are of particular value in many emerging markets around the world. On average, premium content and applications account for 45-50 percent of an operator’s data services revenue, significantly boosting average revenue per user (ARPU) when complemented with other packet data services such as multimedia messaging. PCSS is based on open standards and provides non-disruptive, future-proof implementation within the operator’s existing infrastructure and business systems environment.

“As a global technology leader in the wireless space with extensive experience bringing premium content services to wireless consumers, our support for the over the air purchasing and provisioning of Java applications marks a significant milestone for the wireless carrier community,” said Toru Arakawa, President and CEO, ACCESS Co., Ltd. “We are pleased to provide a J2ME infrastructure solution with our PCSS technology.”
