Pumatech and ACCESS to Cooperate On Advanced Solution to Facilitate Server-Based, Wireless Synchronization

ACCESS Companies Will Jointly Develop And Market A SyncML-based, Server-to-device Solution For ACCESS’ NetFrontPlatform

SAN JOSE, Calif. / Tokyo, Japan (1/08/04) – Pumatech, Inc., a leading provider of synchronization software and services, and ACCESS Co., Ltd. (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 4813), a global provider of mobile content delivery and access technologies for information appliances, today announced that they intend to jointly develop an advanced solution designed to synchronize SyncML-compliant mobile devices with PIM (personal information management) software, enterprise applications, Web-based services and more. Through the agreement, ACCESS will license Pumatech’s TrueSync® SyncML technology and also develop a PIM (Personal Information Management) software application optimized for mobile & wireless devices. ACCESS will provide these capabilities together with its popular NetFront solution, the most widely deployed and actively used embedded Web browser in the world.

The incorporation of TrueSync technology – developed by Starfish Software, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pumatech – will enable synchronization of email, calendar and contact data between NetFront-based information appliances and a variety of essential PC-based applications. The solution will be targeted to a worldwide market.

“In order to serve the needs of the ever-changing mobile and wireless market even more effectively, it was essential that we incorporate proven data-synchronization capabilities into our NetFront browser” said Toru Arakawa, CEO and President of ACCESS Co., Ltd. “By embedding Pumatech’s TrueSync technology, we’re leveraging a leading, SyncML-compliant technology platform that maximizes the number of devices and applications we can support. The TrueSync platform also provides the basis for the server-based, wireless sync solution on which we also plan to collaborate with Pumatech.”

TrueSync, one of the most widely adopted synchronization solutions in the world, is designed to provide end-to-end synchronization for wireless data, services, enterprise applications, mobile devices and corporate infrastructures. The TrueSync technology platform comprises a comprehensive set of wireless and wireline synchronization products and solutions. TrueSync solutions support a wide universe of devices, desktop applications, enterprise server applications and Web services. TrueSync’s multi-point architecture is highly scalable and designed for enterprise, wireless operator and device manufacturer deployments.

NetFront recently surpassed 100 million deployments in devices ranging from mobile phones and PDAs to digital televisions, gaming consoles and Telematics systems. ACCESS’ technology is included in Internet solutions from many of the world’s leading mobile operators, software providers and electronics manufacturers including AT&T Wireless, China Mobile, China Unicom, Handspring, Hutchison 3G Group, IBM, KDDI, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, PalmSource, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and more.

“Our agreement with ACCESS underscores TrueSync’s potential to add significant value to a technology platform that has already achieved extensive success in Japan,” said Clyde Foster, Pumatech’s senior vice president of sales and marketing. “We look forward to working with ACCESS both to deliver leading-edge synchronization capabilities to NetFront-equipped devices – and to increase adoption of the NetFront platform worldwide.”
