ACCESS Announces MMS Client Software

First deployment will be in mobile phones manufactured by Matsushita for global markets

Tokyo, Japan / Fremont, CA, USA / Oberhausen, Germany – December 16, 2002 – ACCESS (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 4813), a global provider of integrated, next-generation data platforms and Internet access technologies for the mobile communications market, announced the global launch of its proprietary MMS (Multimedia Messaging Service) client software, ACCESS MMS Client. ACCESS’ MMS application has been partially embedded in Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd.’s mobile phones, GD87 and GD88 series, designed for global markets, like Europe and China.

Unlike SMS (Short Message Service) which allows only delivery of text, MMS allows delivery of still photography, video, voice, animation etc. between handsets with the same ease as the text delivery provided by SMS. Beyond a mere communication platform between mobile telephones, the features made possible by MMS client software are watched closely by content and application vendors as a next-generation B2C platform. The global mobile message service market comprised of SMS, EMS (Enhanced Messaging Service) and MMS, is expected to reach US$20 billion in size by 2004. Within that market, MMS is seen as representative of 2.5G and 3G killer applications.

ACCESS’ MMS Client is a low energy consuming, high performance MMS client software based on proven browser technologies that conforms to the standards promoted by 3GPP (3G Partnership Project – an institution promoting international standards in 3G mobile telecommunication systems) and Open Mobile Alliance (OMA, formerly the WAP Forum) in which ACCESS participates as a member and editor.
