BARCELONA, SPAIN—3GSM World Congress — February 12, 2007 — ACCESS CO., LTD., today announced that the Product Development Kit (PDK) for ACCESS Linux Platform v1.0 is now available to licensees.  The Company has also begun distributing a pre-release version of the Software Development Kit (SDK) and Garnet VM Compatibility Kit to a number of developers.

Today the Company also announced that ACCESS Linux Platform is the official name of its next-generation Linux®-based software platform optimized for mobile phones and other converged mobile devices.  In addition, the ACCESS Garnet OS (also known as Palm OS® Garnet) compatibility layer included with ACCESS Linux Platform, has been named ACCESS Garnet VM*.

ACCESS will feature a number of ACCESS Linux Platform demonstrations in its booth at the upcoming 3GSM World Congress (February 12 -15, 2007, Barcelona, Spain, Booth CY06).

“Just as is the case with the ACCESS NetFront Browser, the ACCESS Linux Platform software has been designed from day one specifically for mobile phones and converged devices. We believe this approach has enabled us to deliver an integrated, commercial-grade Linux-based platform that is optimized to provide true flexibility, openness and customizability for handset and mobile device manufacturers, operators and developers,” said Tomihisa Kamada, CTO and co-founder of ACCESS. “We believe ACCESS Linux Platform will enable our licensees and developers to deliver exciting and innovative new mobile phones, converged mobile devices and applications.”

ACCESS Linux Platform
ACCESS Linux Platform combines the best-in-class open source Linux components with proven mobile technologies from the portfolios of ACCESS Systems Americas, Inc. (formerly PalmSource, Inc.) and ACCESS CO., LTD. These components have been optimized and integrated to provide a flexible, customizable and open operating system software platform designed to provide handset and mobile device manufacturers, operators and third party developers with a solution that will enable them to deliver innovative and exciting new products.

ACCESS Linux Platform v1.0 includes the ACCESS Garnet VM, a compatibility layer that allows thousands of existing applications written for ACCESS Garnet OS to run seamlessly (with little or no modification) on the ACCESS Linux Platform software. This unique compatibility layer has been designed to provide an easy migration path for users who rely on these applications and expands the addressable market for the current 30,000 68K-based Palm OS® applications.

Also included in ACCESS Linux Platform is the Hiker Application Framework, the industry’s first open source, mobile Linux application framework for commercial use. Released under the MPL v1.1 license, the Hiker Application Framework integrates communication between applications, enabling a seamless user experience for music, messaging and other advanced features. The Hiker Application Framework also provides services needed for commercial products, including security and application management. The Hiker Application Framework is available for download at:

ACCESS Linux Platform PDK
The ACCESS Linux Platform v 1.0 PDK is now available to licensees. The PDK includes all the necessary components, tools, samples and documentation to develop customized mobile devices based on the ACCESS Linux Platform software including:

  • All platform components (including a Linux reference kernel)
  • Reference drivers and development kit
  • Application development kit
  • A complete Eclipse-based set of development tools
  • Documentation
ACCESS Linux Platform Development Suite
The ACCESS Developer Network has released the ACCESS Linux Platform Development Suite (SDK & Tools) to a number of independent developers participating in the ACCESS Developer Network Early ACCESS Program. The Early ACCESS Program gives qualified third party developers access to pre-release technical and market development resources to accelerate innovation on ACCESS Linux Platform.

Developers interested in participating in the Early Access Program may apply at:

ACCESS Garnet VM Compatibility Kit
ACCESS Garnet VM provides the ability to run existing ACCESS Garnet OS (formerly known as Palm OS® Garnet) applications on the ACCESS Linux Platform. As part of the Early ACCESS program, the ACCESS Developer Network has released the ACCESS Garnet VM Compatibility Kit to a group of leading Palm OS® developers for external testing and validation. The ACCESS Garnet VM Compatibility Kit is a stand-alone kit enabling developers to test their ACCESS Garnet OS-based applications’ compatibility with ACCESS Linux Platform.

Legendary User Interface
Continuing its heritage of developing an innovative, user-friendly User Interface (UI), ACCESS has created a dynamic and intuitive UI optimized for today’s mobile phones and converged devices. The new UI from ACCESS features an activity-based model that has been designed to enable the user to focus on tasks rather than on applications required to complete the task. This model makes it easy to move seamlessly from application to application. For example, to take a picture and send it, the user will utilize the camera, email and contacts applications.  The activity based model will make it possible to move easily from application to application, without coming back to the launcher to accomplish this task.

The ACCESS Linux Platform UI launcher has been designed to launch all types of applications-whether the applications are native ACCESS Linux Platform, ACCESS Garnet OS or Java®. Although the native ACCESS Linux Platform, ACCESS Garnet OS and Java applications have different sets of technical underpinnings, they can be launched from a unified launcher, versus other mobile operating systems available today where applications created in a specific development environment such as Java have to be launched via a Virtual Machine launcher before actually opening the application.

ACCESS Linux Platform at 3GSM World Congress
ACCESS will be showcasing several demonstrations featuring ACCESS Linux Platform in its booth at the 3GSM World Congress, February 12 – 15 at the Fira de Barcelona, in Barcelona, Spain. These demonstrations include ACCESS Linux Platform running on several hardware platforms as well as a demonstration of the development tools available.

At the 3GSM World Congress, ACCESS will publicly demonstrate results from the Early ACCESS program–the first native ACCESS Linux Platform applications, Bejeweled and Solitaire from Astraware, a leading developer of mobile games. The Company will also publicly demonstrate a number of currently available ACCESS Garnet OS-based (Palm OS® Garnet) applications running on the ACCESS Linux Platform transparently via the ACCESS Garnet VM.

The 3GSM World Congress 2007 will be held Monday, February 12 through Thursday, February 15 at the Fira de Barcelona in Barcelona, Spain. The Company’s booth, CY06, will be located in the Courtyard of the Fira de Barcelona.

Exhibit hours are:
