ACCESS, Samsung, and ZRRT Team to Deliver First JTWI Mobile Handset in China

ACCESS Technology Powering Java Handset for China Unicom’s UniJa Service

Beijing, China /Tokyo, Japan– July 15, 2004 – ACCESS (Tokyo Stock Exchange: 4813), a global provider of mobile content delivery and Internet access technologies, today announced that the new Samsung X859 handset is powered by ACCESS Java technology. The X859 is the first commercial handset in the world to adopt a JTWI compatible Java solution, as well as the first UniJa enabled CDMA 1X handset for China Unicom. The phone was launched in China earlier this month.

China Unicom’s UniJa is a new Java-based service that is fully compliant with the JTWI standard (Java Technology for the Wireless Industry), and it also includes China Unicom’s extensions for DRM (Digital Rights Management) as well as a camera API. The UniJa solution was developed by ZRRT Communications Technology Co., Ltd. (ZRRT), and leverages ACCESS’ world leading Java technology.

Samsung’s X859 handset, with its color screen and ARM7 processor, represents the premier CDMA handset technology available today. Bolstering the handset’s powerful feature-set is a fully optimized Java virtual machine which provides a solid foundation for operators to offer a wide range of popular Java applications, while requiring less hardware and CPU power than other handsets currently on the market.

Major CDMA 1X handset manufacturers are actively working with ACCESS and ZRRT to develop UniJa-enabled mobile handsets, and additional models are expected to be available in the next few months to support China Unicom’s forthcoming Java download service.

“We have a history of joint success with ACCESS since deploying ‘U-mail’ handsets in early 2003,” said Xiaoyang Zhou, VP & General Manager, China Mobile Operation of Samsung: “ACCESS’ global experience and proven technology, together with its excellent technical support, have greatly facilitated our development of the Samsung X859. We are confident that China Unicom subscribers and other end-users will soon enjoy the benefits brought by JTWI support both for business and entertainment applications.

“We’re pleased to work with ACCESS to provide UniJa solutions for handset vendors. The launch of the Samsung X859 handset marks a significant beginning of our relationship. We look forward to further cooperation with ACCESS in wireless data applications,” said Mr. Dajiang Li, President of ZRRT.

“Samsung is the world’s largest CDMA handset manufacturer, and we’re thrilled that the first-ever JTWI compatible CDMA handsets in the world are powered by ACCESS technology,” said Toru Arakawa, President and CEO of ACCESS Co., Ltd. “ACCESS is committed to providing leading Java solutions for China’s telecom operators and handset manufacturers and to bringing the unique and rich experience of wireless Java to Chinese mobile subscribers.”
