ACCESS Demonstrates Leadership at TV Connect in the Three Key Technologies Identified by IHS Screen Digest as Critical to Multiscreen Success

Oberhausen, Germany, − March 20, 2013 − ACCESS CO., LTD, today announced that it will be demonstrating leadership in the three technologies that IHS Screen Digest identify as critical to multiscreen success in its recent white paper ‘Unlocking and Securing Multiscreen’s Monetization Potential’, now available at: http://mediapilot.access-company.com/screendigest.html.

  • DLNA – ACCESS is an acknowledged leader: NetFront Living Connect has achieved an extensive track record of successful DLNA Certified® device deployments on a variety of consumer electronic devices offered by leading manufacturers in markets throughout the world
  • HTML5 – NetFront Browser NX provides the lightning-fast rendering speed for advanced graphics needed to modernize the TV experience
  • Security (CAS/DRM) – ACCESS is partnering with CAS/DRM partners to provide ‘studio confident’ multiscreen solutions necessary to remove the ‘security roadblock’ that is presently the greatest obstacle to multiscreen’s progress.

“Our work in producing DLNA and HTML5 solutions and our collaboration with CAS/DRM partners means that we’re playing a key role in all three technologies that IHS Screen Digest identifies as at the heart of enabling the multiscreen revolution,” said Kiyoyasu Oishi, Chairman and CEO, ACCESS Europe.

“It’s interesting that the IHS Screen Digest paper sites insurance as the main driver of present multiscreen deployments. It’s my opinion that consumers that have signed up for OTT services have done so because they perceive these services to be more exciting than the VoD services offered by operators – this has clearly negatively affected their VoD buy-rates. In addition, most territories have at least one operator that has, or is about to, launch a multiscreen offering. At which point multiscreen moves from ‘insurance’ to a ‘must have’ for other operators in that territory,” concluded Oishi.

Key findings of the report include:
  • OTT has had no discernible impact on subscriber numbers (see Fig. 1)
  • OTT is not affecting marginal revenues from operators’ advanced services
  • Consumers content spend is still predominantly on Pay-TV subscriptions (see Fig. 2)

The report concludes:
“The HTML5 specification will allow operators to develop a single backend code base, reach across the CE landscape broadly and economically, and manage application lifecycle costs with relative ease. Widely-interoperable DRM solutions will help to eliminate the operational costs of managing multiple, independent DRM schemes, and will remove barriers to content rights acquisition. Finally, DLNA-based, in-home multiscreen solutions will allow operators to ensure high quality of service, deliver a seamless multi-device experience, potentially minimize the cost of incremental rights acquisition, and implement paid-for business models that can be used to generate additional revenues at the margin.”
