ACCESS Teams up with China’s Spreadtrum Communications

  • ACCESS’ NetFrontMobile Client Suite embedded in Spreadtrum’s 2.5/3G platforms
  • Spreadtrum Communications becomes member of ACCESS Connect Ecosystem

Tokyo, Japan, – October 23, 2007 – ACCESS CO., LTD., a global provider of advanced software technologies to the mobile and beyond-PC markets, today announced that it has further expanded its partnership with China’s Spreadtrum Communications by incorporating Spreadtrum into the ACCESS Connect Ecosystem (ACE) program and developing a new license agreement to include ACCESS’ NetFront Mobile Client Suite (NMCS) in its 2.5/3G platform.

Spreadtrum, one of China’s leading wireless baseband chipset providers, has joined the ACE program, a worldwide alliance of companies under which ACE partners work closely with ACCESS to expand the mobile Linux® market and help fuel the growth of converged technologies and devices.

As a result of the newly-announced license agreement, Spreadtrum will begin embedding NMCS on selected 2.5G and upcoming 3G chipset platforms. NMCS offers a more comprehensive and integrated solution for major mobile operators, handset vendors and design houses by featuring highly-integrated, modular, flexible and customized solutions.

Since 2005, ACCESS China and Spreadtrum have developed an in-depth partnership based on another ACCESS application — Economical Mobile Client Suite (EMCS). EMCS has been deployed by numerous Chinese handset vendors and design houses and is featured on dozens of currently available mobile phone models. This newly-signed agreement further demonstrates the expansion and progress of ACCESS China and Spreadtrum’s cooperation by integrating ACCESS’ NMCS into Spreadtrum’s original 2.5G and TD-SCDMA 3G platforms, as well as into the newly released MocorTM platform that converges wireless communication, multi-media and Internet services.

“ACCESS and Spreadtrum Communications have maintained a strong relationship in China for a very long time. ACCESS views cooperation between hardware platform vendors and software providers as very significant in the connected mobile world — it’s the way for a whole industry to benefit,” said Pierre Suhandinata, president and CEO of ACCESS China. “With an increasingly in-depth and multiple-level partnership with Spreadtrum, we are confident that we can provide better solutions for our customers.”

“ACCESS is a global leader in advanced mobile software technologies with very strong technical expertise and an established track record providing support for global operators,” said Dr. Harry Qin, vice president of operations, Spreadtrum Communications, Inc. “We are very excited to benefit from ACCESS’ technological expertise.”

Cooperation between ACCESS China and Spreadtrum Communications
The cooperation between ACCESS China and Spreadtrum was initially focused on applications and browsers. However, as the relationship between the two companies has expanded, Spreadtrum has become one of ACCESS China’s most important chipset partners. Together, the two companies provide solutions for OEM/ODM customers through chipset level bundling. Integrated with ACCESS’ mobile client suites, Spreadtrum’s 2.5G chipset platforms, such as the SC6600 and SC6800 series, have been widely adopted by numerous Chinese handset manufacturers and design houses. To date, EMCS has been deeply integrated into many of Spreadtrum’s mobile technology platforms.

ACCESS Connect Ecosystem (ACE) Program
The ACE partner program is designed to create an ecosystem of world-class partners that will unleash the potential of the digital life generation by driving development and adoption of new mobile converged technologies and solutions. In the short eight months since its creation, the program has rapidly grown to include 73 members.
