Spreadtrum was founded in 2001, with its primary operating subsidiary established in Shanghai's Zhangjiang High-Tech Park and offices and R&D centers set up in the U.S. (Silicon Valley; Austin, TX) and other cities in China (Beijing, Shenzhen).

Spreadtrum's key strength is a passion for independent technical innovation. With unique ideas and technology in design, Spreadtrum offers a comprehensive portfolio of highly-integrated baseband solutions that support a broad range of wireless communications standards, including GSM, GPRS and TD-SCDMA, an international 3G wireless standard promoted by China. Among Spreadtrum accomplishments, it has successfully developed the world's first single chip TD-SCDMA/GSM dual mode solution and the first advanced GSM/GPRS baseband chip that integrated multimedia and power management unit. Coupled with the corresponding software and handset reference design solutions, the core chips have been adopted by several brand handset manufacturers. As a result, Spreadtrum's products have received notable acceptance in the market.
