A few weeks ago, an Internet research company released a study saying Apple’s iPhone was used more than any other cell phone to access the Internet with a browser. ACCESS which acquired rights to Palm not so long ago (which then sold the ‘Palm’ brand name back to… er… Palm) has a new website dedicated to the ACCESS Linux Project and published soem screenshots. The replacement (one out of many?) for Palm OS 5 looks to be shaping up nicely indeed. Wish I can get hold of an engineering sample phone.

August 10, 2007 Screenshots of the ACCESS Linux Platform appear at LinuxWorld
LinuxWorld is taking place this week and I just saw an article on PalmInfocenter that linked to the source article on MobileLinuxInfo that shows screenshots from the upcoming ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP). This was the Linux OS that Palm was going to put on their devices, but now it is uncertain since Palm is developing their own Linux OS. The ALP may be coming to other mobile devices and the MobileLinuxInfo article shows an iPhone-like layout at the top of the screen. ACCESS have launched a new website for the ACCESS Linux Platform (ALP) with new developer documentation and details about the platform. The company has also announced a number of new partners and initiatives around ALP at the LinuxWorld going on now in San Francisco. MobieLinuxInfo has put together over 10 screenshots of the linux powered platform in action and goes over some of the new ALP news announced this week.

The GNOME Foundation is scheduled to announce the GNOME Mobile and Embedded Initiative (GMAE) today at the Embedded Linux Conference in Santa Clara, Calif. The initiative is aimed at bolstering GNOME usage as an embedded and mobile development platform. Founding members include open source organizations and commercial interests such as ACCESS, Canonical, Intel, Debian, Nokia, Red Hat, Fluendo, the Linux Foundation, and Maemo.

ACCESS will contribute a mobile application platform to the open source community before year's end, it says.
